Definition

Favourite (上盤): The team/player giving the handicap (considered to be the stronger side).
Underdog (下盤): The team/player receiving the handicap (considered to be the weaker side).

Note: Favourites usually have lower odds, while underdogs come with higher odds.

Mechanism

Bookmakers issue handicap markets based on the strength gap between the two sides. For example:

  • Favourite (上盤): Gives a half-ball handicap (讓半球), gives a one-ball handicap (讓一球), gives a flat/half-ball handicap (讓平半).

  • Underdog (下盤): Receives a half-ball handicap (受讓半球), receives a one-ball handicap (受讓一球).

The Purpose of Handicapping:

To balance the disparity in strength between the two sides, making the betting field fairer.

Usage Scenarios

  • Strong team playing at home > rightarrow > Tendency towards the Favourite (上盤).

  • Cup matches with rotated lineups > rightarrow > Value of the Underdog (下盤) increases.

  • Massive gap between sides > rightarrow Deeper handicaps are given (e.g., giving a 1.75 ball handicap).

Risk / Compliance Points

  • Market Fluctuations: Line movements are frequently influenced by betting volume (public money).

  • Anti-Manipulation: Odds and lines cannot be artificially manipulated to induce or trap bets, as this constitutes illegal match/betting manipulation.

  • KYC Requirements: Verification processes must strictly block organized "syndicate arbitrage/hedging" operations.

Common Misconceptions

Misconception Description
Favourite = Strong team is guaranteed to win Even if a team has superior strength, they may still fail to cover the handicap (win the bet).
High odds on Underdog = Fixed/Rigged match High odds on the underdog are simply a form of risk compensation for bettors.
