Definition

The big blind (BB) is a compulsory bet in poker games such as Texas Hold’em and Omaha. At a standard multiway table, the player two seats clockwise from the dealer button posts a predetermined amount before the cards are dealt. It helps seed the pot, creating an incentive to contest the hand rather than fold without anything at stake. In iGaming, the big blind is both a basic game parameter and a standard unit for expressing stack depth and rake limits.

How the Big Blind Works

Blinds are compulsory bets posted before players see their cards. The big blind is usually twice the small blind. Blind positions move clockwise with the dealer button after each hand, so players take turns bearing their cost over time.

  • Position:  Normally, the player immediately clockwise from the button posts the small blind, and the next player clockwise posts the big blind.

  • Pre-flop option:  If no one raises pre-flop, the big blind has the final initial action. When earlier players have only called or folded, the big blind can check or raise.

  • Post-flop order:  After the flop, players in the blinds act early in each betting round and are generally out of position relative to players in later seats.

The Big Blind as a Unit of Measurement

In online poker and performance analysis, the big blind is more than a bet amount. It is a standardised unit for comparing stack sizes and results across different stakes.

MetricCalculation / DefinitionApplication in iGaming and Poker Strategy
Stack Depth (BB)Current chip stack ÷ the table’s big blind amount.Removes differences in currency and stakes, allowing consistent comparisons of stack strategies, such as short stacks of 20 BB and deep stacks of 100 BB.
Win / Loss Rate (bb/100)(Net chips won or lost ÷ big blind amount) × 100 ÷ hands played.A standard performance measure showing big blinds won or lost per 100 hands, used in evaluating player results and platform game models.
Rake CapA per-hand rake limit expressed as a multiple of the big blind, such as 3 BB or 5 BB.Helps game providers design table rake rules and balance the game’s economic model.

Considerations for iGaming Development and Operations

For online poker operators and game developers, blind rules affect game flow and the consistent enforcement of game requirements:

  1. Posting blinds and joining a table:  Players joining an ongoing game generally wait for the big blind or post a big blind to enter immediately, preventing them from avoiding their share of compulsory bets.

  2. Antes and the big blind ante:  Some tournaments and cash games use a big blind ante to streamline play. The big blind player posts a single ante for the table, commonly equal to one big blind, reducing the processing of multiple small contributions.

  3. Blind structure:  In tournaments, the big blind increases according to a predefined schedule, for example every 10 minutes. Rising blinds put pressure on shorter stacks to play hands and help control the tournament’s duration.

Summary

The big blind seeds the pot and provides a key reference unit for assessing player performance, designing online poker’s economic model and monitoring game data. Understanding its rules and measurement uses helps explain the design and operation of online poker products.
