Analysis of the iGaming Markets and iGaming White Label Solution
I originally wanted to separate the gambling markets of Uganda and Tanzania to analyze the gambling markets of these two countries, but considering that the official languages of these two countries are the same, they are neighboring countries, and at the same time, they both belong to the African gambling market area. Therefore, let’s analyze the two countries, Uganda and Tanzania, together so as to compare the gambling markets of these two countries.
As always, today, the editor of TC-Gaming will compare the economic, humanistic, and gambling status quo of Uganda and Tanzania, as well as the commonalities and differences between the two countries. First, let’s talk about the history of love and conflict between Uganda and Tanzania. It can be said that they are entangled.
Basic overview of Uganda and Tanzania
Uganda, a country in eastern Africa, borders Kenya to the east, Tanzania and Rwanda to the south, and Congo to the west. This is why I decided to tell Uganda and Tanzania together, as they both belong to the same geographical area. In terms of language and culture, the two countries have many similarities and intersections. Since the Uganda-Tanzania war, the political situation in Uganda and Tanzania has remained relatively stable. This politically stable environment provides the necessary foundation for the survival of the gambling industry. This is why we can see the booming development of the gambling industry in these two countries: a stable political environment is an important guarantee for the survival and development of the gambling industry. What language is spoken in Uganda?
As a multicultural country, Uganda has a rich variety of languages. The official languages of Uganda include English and Swahili, both of which are widely spoken throughout the country. In addition, each tribe in Uganda also has its own language. These languages are diverse and unique, but most of them only have pronunciation and no writing. Therefore, oral transmission is particularly important among each tribe. Among these tribal languages, Luganda is the most commonly used, especially in central Uganda, including the capital, Kampala, where Luganda is spoken by a large number of residents. Swahili is also commonly spoken in some areas of northern and northeastern Uganda, especially in some border areas, where Swahili is used more frequently.
But for English you can see it with a chart. English is also very common in Uganda, and most educated people use English.
Tanzania is a country with extremely rich linguistic diversity, and its richness of language varieties is unparalleled in the entire East Africa region. You can hear more languages than you can imagine in this country.
Among the many languages spoken in Tanzania, Swahili is the most widely spoken. According to statistics, as many as 90% of Tanzanians can speak Swahili fluently. Swahili is the official working language of Tanzania and is used not only in Parliament but also in legal proceedings in the lower courts. In addition to this, Swahili is also widely used in school teaching.
Since then, President Jakaya Kikwete announced education reforms in early 2015, and secondary schools and higher education institutions have gradually used English as the main language of instruction. This reform has significantly increased the use rate of English in Tanzania, making it an important second language in Tanzania and having a wide range of speakers in the country.
How are the economies of Uganda and Tanzania?
Per capita and national GD
Tanzania GDP
Judging from the macroeconomic indicator- the country's GDP- we can see that Tanzania's economic situation is better than that of Uganda. However, in order to more fully understand and compare the economic conditions of these two countries, we further studied their per capita GDP. Per capita GDP is an important indicator that can better reflect a country's affluence and people's living standards. By comparing and analyzing the per capita GDP of these two countries, we will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the economic differences between the two countries.
The difference in GDP per capita between Tanzania and Uganda is almost $200 a year. For such a number of people, they may not feel much emotion and have no practical concept. To make this number more practical, you can compare it to India’s GDP per capita, which is $2,256 per year. If India's gambling market has begun to attract some bookmakers' attention, then Uganda and Tanzania may just be the first stops in their search. Some people may question whether such a front station is suitable, but we cannot judge all situations based on GDP per capita alone. We need to take into account the size of the local family and the gap between the rich and the poor. In fact, the gap between rich and poor in these two countries is very large. Therefore, people above the middle class will be the main user targets of gambling platforms. They are the people that gambling platforms need to pay attention to and attract. At the same time, you should also consider how you promote and operate it. Different methods may have very different user groups and operating costs. (The editor will talk about it in detail below)
Summary
Uganda and Tanzania are two countries on the African continent; although their economic status and per capita gross domestic product (GDP) are relatively low, this does not conceal their potential in the gambling market. Judging from GDP data, the gambling markets in these two countries are still in their infancy, but their market size cannot be ignored. The two countries have large populations, with a combined population base of nearly 100 million. This is a huge market. Therefore, although their current betting market is still in its infancy, their potential cannot be underestimated. Therefore, these two countries can serve as outposts for the gambling industry to open up new markets. At the same time, the gap between rich and poor in these two countries is large, so the range of users targeted by gambling operators will be smaller (Mainly the urban population) because it is more convenient and cost-effective in promotion.
Population status of Tanzania and Uganda in 2023
Tanzania’s population statusIn January 2023, Tanzania’s total population reached 66.46 million. This number is a considerable increase, and if we look back to the previous year, between 2022 and 2023, Tanzania's population increased by 1.9 million people, a growth of 3.0%. This population growth situation can be seen in the development trend of Tanzania's population.
In terms of gender ratio, women make up 50.6% of the population in Tanzania, while men make up 49.4%. This ratio basically shows a balanced state, with the female population slightly more than the male population. As for the distribution of the population, 37.0% of the population lives in urban centers, and this population is mainly concentrated in Tanzania's large cities. 63.0% of the population lives in rural areas, which also reflects the existence of urban-rural gaps.
The total population of Tanzania is broken down by age groups:
- 16.4% are aged 0 to 4 years old.
- 22.0% were aged 5 to 12 years old.
- 11.7% are between 13 and 17 years old.
- 13.3% are between 18 and 24 years old.
- 13.4% are aged 25 to 34 years old.
- 10.2% are aged 35 to 44 years old.
- 6.3% are aged 45 to 54 years old.
- 3.6% are aged 55 to 64 years old.
- 3.1% are aged 65 and above.
In January 2023, Uganda’s total population reached 47.91 million. This figure was reached through population growth over the past year, between 2022 and 2023, during which time Uganda’s population increased by approximately 1.3 million people, which is a considerable 2.9% growth. Of this total population, women account for 50.5%, while men account for 49.5%. This ratio is almost equal, showing that Uganda has a well-balanced sex ratio. In addition, Uganda's population distribution is also very obvious, with 26.4% of the population living in urban centers. This part of the population enjoys the convenience of urban life. The majority of the population, 73.6%, lives in rural areas.
Uganda’s population by age group:
- 16.6% are between 0 and 4 years old.
- 22.9% were between 5 and 12 years old.
- 12.4% are between 13 and 17 years old.
- 14.7% are between 18 and 24 years old.
- 15.2% are between 25 and 34 years old.
- 8.5% are between 35 and 44 years old.
- 5.2% are between 45 and 54 years old.
- 2.9% were between 55 and 64 years old.
- 1.7% are aged 65 and above.
Tanzania’s population base will be larger than that of Uganda. It is growing at a rate of millions every year. However, for the gambling industry, population growth is not very optimistic. It mainly depends on the living situation of the population in cities. Obviously, Tanzania will be better.
Religious beliefs in Tanzania and Uganda
Religious Religion
Tanzania In Tanzania, a country with diverse cultures and religions, residents have different beliefs. In the mainland part of Tanganyika, about 61% of the residents believe in Christianity, which includes both Protestant and Catholic believers. In addition, about 35% of the residents believe in Islam. The rest practice primitive fetishism, an ancient form of religion deeply rooted in local culture. However, in Zanzibar, Islam is the dominant religion, with 99% of the residents practicing Islam. This high ratio clearly demonstrates the importance of Islam in the Zanzibar community.
Ugandan religious beliefs
In the 1860s, Christianity and Islam began to spread in Uganda, deeply affecting the country's religious scene. The spread of these two religions had a profound impact on Ugandan culture and society. According to the 2002 census, up to 85% of Uganda's population believes in Christianity, and religious belief plays an important role in this country. Specifically, Roman Catholic believers account for 41.9% of the total population, making them the largest religious group in Uganda. Followed by Protestantism, accounting for 35.9% of the population. At the same time, the Orthodox Church has the fewest adherents in Uganda. In addition, although Islam has a smaller influence in this country, 12.1% of the population still believes in Islam.
Religious Differences in Uganda and Tanzania
Although these two countries have some common characteristics in religion, such as Christianity and Islam as their main religious beliefs, due to the differences in their geographical location and cultural background, religious practices and Forms of belief also vary. For companies that operate gambling platforms, they need to fully understand and consider these factors and formulate targeted promotion strategies and plans accordingly. Such a strategy needs to take into account the specific conditions and characteristics of each country in order to better meet market needs, increase the platform's influence and awareness, and thereby stand out in a highly competitive market environment.
What will the Internet situation be like in Tanzania and Uganda in 2023?
The Internet situation in Uganda
As of January 2023, the number of Internet users in Uganda has reached 11.77 million, which accounts for 24.6% of the national population. In other words, approximately 36.15 million people in Uganda do not yet have access to the Internet, meaning 75.4% of the country’s population is still offline.
However, despite this, Internet penetration in Uganda has increased significantly in recent years. Between 2022 and 2023, the number of Internet users in Uganda increased by 1 million, a growth rate of 9.4%. This number is not only much higher than the average growth rate in previous years but also clearly shows the rapid development trend of the Internet in Uganda.
Internet Situation in Tanzania
In January 2023, the number of Internet users in Tanzania reached 21 million, which is a considerable number. This means that in this African country, a large number of people are using the Internet.
By the beginning of 2023, Tanzania's Internet penetration rate has accounted for 31.6% of the total population, which is a large proportion. This means that more and more Tanzanians are beginning to access and use the Internet, whether for work, study, or entertainment.
According to Kepios's analysis, from 2022 to 2023, the number of Internet users in Tanzania increased by 606,000, an increase of 3.0%. This data reflects the continued growth of Internet users in Tanzania.(Compared to Uganda, Tanzania’s Internet growth rate is much lower than that of Uganda).
However, in the long run, this user data still reveals some problems. As of the beginning of 2023, 45.46 million people in Tanzania still did not have access to the Internet, which means that 68.4% of the population was still offline at the beginning of the year. This figure clearly points out the huge challenges still facing Internet penetration in Tanzania.
What are the internet connection speeds in Tanzania and Uganda in 2023?
Tanzania’s Internet connection speed

In fact, this speed is considered slow among global Internet speeds, but it can still meet the daily needs of most people.

Fixed internet connection speeds also increased over the same period, increasing by 1.47 Mbps for a growth rate of 15.9%. This also shows that Uganda pays more attention to the development of mobile Internet.
Internet differences between Tanzania and Uganda:
First, let’s look at the number of Internet users in Tanzania, which is almost twice as high as in Uganda. This huge gap may be due to Tanzania's numerical advantage. However, when we look at it from an internet speed perspective, Uganda is significantly better than Tanzania. Furthermore, Uganda’s annual velocity growth is also much higher than Tanzania’s, which is a noteworthy finding. However, if you ask me to evaluate the development of the Internet in these two countries, I can only say that compared to other countries, including the Philippines and Vietnam, their Internet speed is still lagging behind. Determined by the country’s economic status and people’s living standards. So it will take a while, whether in Tanzania or Uganda, to reach the levels of other more developed countries.

Male users account for 59.2%, and approximately 1,213,600 male users are using social media. This data shows that there are more male than female social media users in Uganda. Personal observation and understanding
Differences in current situation of social media in Sannia and Uganda
Although there are some differences in social media data between the two countries, these differences do not change the overall situation. If you add up the number of social media users in these two countries, there are about 7 million. However, this does not ensure that everyone has only one account. Despite this, we can still conclude that the majority of these 7 million social media users are people over 18 years old. Among these users, there are more male users. This also reflects that among social media user groups, male users may be more active.

What is the difference in the number of Facebook Messenger users in Tanzania and Uganda?
First, let’s be clear: Tanzania and Uganda are not rich countries. In fact, you could say that the economic conditions of these two countries are quite poor. However, this does not affect our understanding of Messenger. Messenger is very popular among people in these two countries, and its functions are very similar to those we are familiar with, such as WeChat and Telegram. This is the main software used by people to communicate and interact with each other. For this reason, we can infer that the most active social users are probably primarily using Messenger. Considering this fact, we can foresee that Facebook and Messenger will likely become the main battlefields for competition in gambling platform promotion channels in the future. This is because these two platforms have a large user base and are very active.
Number of LinkedIn users in Tanzania and Uganda in 2023
Number of LinkedIn users in Tanzania
According to data released by LinkedIn, at the beginning of 2023, the number of LinkedIn members in Tanzania reached 1.1 million. This number is equivalent to 1.7% of Tanzania's total population. Therefore, if we only count the population over 18 years old, LinkedIn’s membership in Tanzania accounts for as high as 3.3%. In addition, LinkedIn's advertising coverage is equivalent to 5.2% of local Internet users (regardless of age), which is quite a high proportion. As for the gender distribution of members, 33.8% are female, and 66.2% are male.
It is worth mentioning that LinkedIn data also shows that between 2022 and 2023, LinkedIn's potential advertising coverage in Tanzania increased by 110,000, a growth rate of 11.1%. This is quite important data because it means that LinkedIn’s influence in Tanzania is increasing year by year, which is undoubtedly good news for gambling operators who want to enter the Tanzania gambling market.

Meanwhile, LinkedIn's potential advertising reach in Uganda has grown significantly between 2022 and 2023, increasing by 190,000 (+23.5%). This shows that more Ugandans are starting to engage with and use LinkedIn.
What is the difference in the number of LinkedIn users in Tanzania and Uganda?
We all know the importance of LinkedIn and its functions; it is a professional social platform that connects professionals from all over the world. From our data, we can clearly see that in Tanzania and Uganda, LinkedIn has become widely accepted and used by users with Internet access. This is a very significant trend, indicating that Internet users in these places are beginning to look for more professional and targeted social platforms. Among LinkedIn's user groups, all users are over 18 years old. This is a mature and professional user group.
Therefore, if we look at Facebook and Messenger as the battleground for the gambling market in Tanzania and Uganda, LinkedIn is undoubtedly at the center of the battleground. The accuracy of its user groups is extremely high, especially middle-level users.
However, there is a significant difference in the number of LinkedIn users between Uganda and Tanzania. It is worth noting that the number of users in Uganda is growing much faster than in Tanzania. Although the user base in Uganda is small, LinkedIn has reached 1 million users and is growing at a rate of 190,000 every year. This shows that LinkedIn’s influence and user acceptance are rapidly increasing in Uganda.
Number of Twitter users in Tanzania and Uganda in 2023
Personal analysis feels that the gender of Twitter users may not be particularly reliable because Twitter infers the gender of the user by analyzing the name entered by the user in the profile and the user’s activities on the platform; at the same time, there are a large number of “…” in Twitter’s active user data. "Non-human" accounts (such as those representing businesses, animals, musicians, etc.) also don't separate these accounts from "real" human individuals the way Facebook and Instagram do, especially in countries where English is not the main language.
Number of Twitter users in Tanzania in 2023
According to Twitter data, we can see that at the beginning of 2023, the number of Twitter users in Tanzania reached 594,800. This number may not impress you, but in reality, this represented 0.9% of Tanzania’s total population at the time. In other words, 1 in 110 Tanzanians is a Twitter user.
More specifically, for the audience aged three and above, Twitter users accounted for 1.5%. When we turn our attention to Tanzania’s Internet user base, Twitter users account for 2.8% regardless of age. This means that for every 35 Tanzanian Internet users, 1 is an active user of Twitter.
In terms of gender ratio, female users account for 12.8%, while males account for the majority, 87.2%. This means that among Tanzanian Twitter users, 7 out of 8 are male, and only one is female.
(Data published in Twitter’s own ad planning tool shows that Twitter’s potential ad reach in Tanzania increased by 125,000 (+26.5%) from early 2022 to early 2023. Over the same period from October 2022 to January 2023 During the month, the number of users reached through Twitter advertising decreased by 5,850-1.0%. Significant fluctuations and anomalies in this data may affect its reliability and representativeness. Therefore, this can only be said about Twitter as a reference).
Number of Twitter users in Uganda in 2023
At the beginning of 2023, Twitter’s user base in Uganda had reached 601,200. This number accounted for 1.3% of the total population of Uganda at that time. If we break this ratio down to people aged 13 and above, we find that 2.1% are Twitter users. When we break this down again into Ugandan internet users (regardless of age), we find that 5.1% of people are using Twitter. Among these Twitter users, 22.9% are female, while the remaining 77.1% are male. This means there are more than three times as many male users as female users in Uganda.
(From early 2022 to early 2023, Twitter data shows an increase of 183,000 (+43.7%) in Uganda. At the same time, between October 2022 and January 2023, the number of users that Twitter ads can reach increased by 18,000+ 3.1%. This is the major fluctuation and abnormality in the data I mentioned above)
Mobile connections in Tanzania and Uganda in 2023
(When data about the number of mobile connections exceeds that of Internet users or population, it may be the case that many people use multiple mobile connections at the same time, for example they may have one connection for personal use and another for work).
Number of mobile connections in Tanzania in 2023
According to data from the Global Systems Association for Mobile Communications (GSMA), by the beginning of 2023, the number of mobile cellular connections in Tanzania had reached 57.42 million. This number is equivalent to 86.4% of the total population of Tanzania, revealing the widespread use of mobile connections in Tanzania. Although this may be mostly for work, it also illustrates that there may be a large number of outsiders using data in Tanzania. Connect for work. In the years 2022 to 2023, the number of mobile connections in Tanzania increased by 4.2 million, with a growth rate of 7.9%, which shows the rapid development and huge potential of Tanzania's mobile communications market.
Number of mobile connections in Uganda
At the beginning of 2023, the number of mobile cellular connections in Uganda reached 30.55 million, a number equivalent to 63.8% of its total population. This shows that Uganda's mobile communications market has developed to a considerable scale and covers most of the population. If we look further, from 2022 to 2023, the number of mobile connections in Uganda has also increased. Specifically, it has increased by 286,000, a year-on-year increase of 0.9%. Although this growth figure is small, it reflects the steady and sustained development trend of Uganda's mobile communications market.
What is the difference in mobile connection numbers between Tanzania and Uganda in 2023?
Looking at the number of mobile connections, mobile connections are widely used in work and daily life in Tanzania. You may ask, why is this? The main reason is that although the salary of most local people is still below 1,000 yuan, the usage rate of mobile connections is very high. This phenomenon may seem strange to people, but my personal feeling is that it may be related to the large number of foreigners living there. The presence of these foreigners may have driven the use of mobile connectivity to some extent. In addition, the popularity of mobile connectivity may also be due to its own convenience and practicality, which makes people still willing to use it even when their salary is lower. However, comparing the two countries, Uganda has a smaller proportion of connections than Tanzania.
What is the current state of the gambling market in Tanzania and Uganda?
The Current Situation of Gambling in Tanzania
In Tanzania, the gambling industry is legal, and the country has its own specialized agency to regulate it. The Tanzania Gambling Commission is a gambling regulatory body established by the Gambling Act, which came into effect on July 1, 2003, and is known as Decree 41. The main responsibility of this agency is to comprehensively supervise, monitor, and regulate gambling activities in Tanzania. Their work covers a wide range of gambling activities, including, but not limited to, casinos, gambling facilities, and online gambling sites.
Gambling in Tanzania was previously regulated by the Pools and Lotteries Act 1967 and the National Lottery Act 1974. Prior to the start of economic reforms in 1985, Tanzania had only the National Lottery as a significant gambling activity conducted by the defunct National Lottery Corporation. Economic liberalization policies and reform programs, especially the promulgation of the National Investment Promotion and Protection Law of 1992, stimulated investment projects in the hotel and leisure industry. Ongoing economic reforms require the development of a National Policy on Gambling Activities and the subsequent enactment of the Gambling Act.
The editor of TC-Gaming did not find the latest information about Tanzania’s gambling revenue, but found on the Tanzania Gambling Commission website a news report on gambling revenue in 2019: The editor of TC-Gaming has simplified the content to roughly say There are several pieces of information:

Gambling situation in Uganda
For Uganda, it is the center of the rise of gambling in East Africa. Gambling has brought great economic benefits to East African countries in recent years. Other countries have followed suit. Gambling is legal in Uganda, and the Lotteries and Betting Act 2016 empowers the board to carry out its functions. The bill is supported by five regulations that came into effect on May 27, 2016. The law empowers the Commission to license and regulate the operations of lotteries, casinos, and gambling companies (the industry).According to NLGRB CEO Denis Mudende Ngabirano, who met with Ugandan MPs, “The National Lottery and Gambling Regulatory Board’s annual revenue has increased from 174 million in the 2015/16 financial year. Billion shillings increased to 151 billion shillings in the 2022/23 financial year.
A study in 2016 showed that 37% of men in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, had betting experience. At the same time, another study conducted by the Uganda Economic Policy Research Center Research shows that about 45% of Ugandan men aged 18-30 participate in some form of gambling.
The proportion drops to 25% for men over 30. However, the country's female gambling population is relatively small, with only 4% claiming to have gambled in the past year. Gambling activities were carried out in 2018. However, this number is said to have increased significantly during the epidemic, with many Ugandans gambling online at home.
Summary
First, we need to understand that Tanzania and Uganda are not rich countries. The average national income of these two countries is very low, with monthly income still below US$130. However, as a betting platform, we cannot wait for the average income in these two countries to increase to a certain level before entering the market. In such a poor country, most policies are focused on making some people rich first. Therefore, there will be some special zones, such as the Capital District or key development areas. These areas often attract foreign investment and become places for foreigners to do business. Such policies can boost local labor and economic income. At the same time, the target users of gambling platforms are usually middle-level users in these places. So, this is not a contradiction.
Furthermore, considering their Internet penetration rate and the number of Internet connections, it is completely disproportionate. This shows that most of the connections are mainly used for work. This is easy to understand. For example, on a gambling platform, there are hundreds or even thousands of accounts maintained. These are connection numbers. This can also be felt from the annual growth of major social media. In particular, the number of LinkedIn users is increasing by 190,000 every year. It can also be inferred that the economic activities in the local special zone are very active.
Therefore, it can be said that the gambling markets in both countries, Tanzania and Uganda, have great potential for development. Although the economic conditions of the two countries are relatively poor, with the rapid economic development of the local special economic zones, the living and development space of the gambling industry is gradually expanding. At the same time, the legal recognition and active supervision of the gambling industry by the two governments also provide a good environment for the development of the gambling market. The public is no stranger to gambling and does not reject it, which provides a stable basis for gambling to survive. At the same time, the languages and religious cultures of the two countries also have many things in common. In particular, the people of both countries are sports enthusiasts.
Therefore, the above analysis summarizes Tanzania and Uganda as an outpost to enter the African gambling market. The reason is that white-label iGaming is not expensive now, so there is no need to worry about operation and maintenance. What needs to be done may be the connection of payment channels with gambling promotion in the local market, as well as customer service. It can be said that the cost is relatively low. But the advantage is that the African gambling market is now the gambling market that major gambling bosses are paying attention to. Therefore, it is a relatively safe choice to use Tanzania and Uganda as entry points to understand and participate in the African gambling market.
